A Turlock man is facing assault and vandalism charges after attacking a man with a shovel, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The incident began just after 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of W. Glenwood Avenue.

The victim was in his vehicle when an unknown man, later identified as Cisco Anthony Angelus, 25, of Turlock, approached and started hitting the front windshield with a shovel, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Parmley.

"The victim stepped out of his vehicle and armed himself with a pipe to defend himself," Parmley said.

Video surveillance from the area shows Angelus repeatedly swinging the shovel with the metal blade toward the victim. At one point Angelus struck the victim with the shovel, causing a non-life-threatening injury, which later required medical attention.

Despite being injured, the victim fought back against Angelus and was able to inflict injuries that required Angelus to be treated at a hospital before being booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and felony vandalism.

It's unknown what prompted Angelus to go on the rampage.
