Toddler injured in crash near Turlock

A rear-end collision on Golden State Boulevard sent a three-year-old boy to the hospital and resulted in DUI charges for a Planada man.

The collision happened at 8:39 p.m. Saturday on southbound Golden State Boulevard, north of Griffith Road.

A 2007 silver Chevy Silverado, was traveling on southbound Golden State Boulevard when it was struck from behind by a 2015 black Honda Accord.

The Honda was being driven by Andres Castaneda, 26, of Planada. According to the California Highway Patrol, Castaneda did not slow prior to striking the back of the Silverado.

Castaneda sustained major injuries from the impact of the collision and was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

The Silverado was being driven by Eduardo Alvarez Flores, 37. Karina Garcia was sitting in the front passenger seat and a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old were both in the back seat. Both of the toddlers were properly restrained, said CHP spokesman Officer Eric Zuniga.

The 3-year-old boy sustained facial lacerations and a head injury, and was flown to Madera Children’s Hospital and is expected to recover, Zuniga said.

The other occupants in the Chevy Silverado had minor injuries and said they would seek their own aid.

Castaneda was suspected to be under influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Due to his severe injuries, Castaneda was released to the care of Memorial Medical Center. Zuniga said he will be facing criminal charges of felony DUI.

The crash remains under investigation.
