The Turlock Police Department is investigating the death of a 22-year-old man who was fatally shot outside a marijuana grow house.

The deceased has been identified as Marcus Culebro, 22, of Turlock.

At 11:40 p.m. Thursday the police department received multiple 911 calls reporting a drive-by shooting had just occurred in the 1100 block of Baywood Lane. The callers reported one person was down in the yard, said Turlock Police Capt. Nino Amirfar.

The first officers at the scene found Culebro suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died from his injuries, Amirfar said.

Inside the home detectives found more than 190 marijuana plants, averaging about three and a half feet tall, Amirfar said.

Investigators learned the suspects had arrived at the home and forced their way inside. They beat and tied up one individual.

As the suspects were leaving the home, the homeowner and several friends were returning from a trip to the store. They pulled up to the house and Culebro was exiting the car when he was shot.

It’s unknown if Culebro was the homeowner or was one of the friends.

Police are looking into the marijuana as a possible motive for the homicide.

Investigators are actively pursuing leads and attempting to gather more information regarding descriptions of suspects and how they fled the scene.
