For the tenth time, the music departments from across the Turlock Unified School District will be welcoming those of all ages to the campus of Pitman High School for the Festival on the Green. The annual event, which takes place this year on March 16, serves as a showcase of the District’s music students, while celebrating character, music and the arts.

According to TUSD, there will be over 1,400 student performers as part of the day’s festivities, including school bands, choirs and orchestras. There will also be several visual arts displays around the campus, as well as booths for student and community clubs and organizations. Additionally, there is expected to be a number of arts and crafts and food vendors.

Festival on the Greens gets underway at 10 a.m. when choir students from grades 5 through 12 take the stage. The choir will be followed up at 12:30 p.m. when the concert orchestras of Pitman and Turlock High are joined by fight-graders from across the district for a special performance. At 2 p.m., the high school chamber orchestras will take the stage alongside students from Dutcher Middle School and other elementary orchestra students.

Following the orchestras, the bands will take over for the first of two performances at 3:30 p.m., when the Turlock and Pitman bands join the bands of Dutcher, Turlock Junior High and fifth graders from select elementary schools. The day will conclude with another band performance from Pitman, Turlock, Dutcher and Turlock Junior High at 5 p.m., this time being joined by the sixth-grade band students from across the district.

The first Festival on the Green was held in 2012 when students and teachers felt that their music programs needed more than just one or two concerts or events per school year to showcase their talents. Since then, the day-long event regularly draws hundreds of students, their families and community members. Last year’s festivities were the first since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
