History of Business: Not many people own their own business in their early-twenties, but Mikayla McSweeney is not your average 21 year old. She’s the owner of OneSixteen Bijou, the newest boutique in downtown Turlock and an expression of the fresh faced owner’s passion for fashion.

McSweeney began her career by working in Hannah’s Boutique in downtown Turlock before it became Bella Forte Boutique in April 2014. Having gained experience working with customers and even helping buy product for the store, McSweeney offered to become a vendor in Bella Forte so that she could sell a handpicked jewelry collection that she cultivated herself. Less than a year later and McSweeney has her own storefront in downtown Turlock.

“It’s been a fast progression,” reflected McSweeney in her new storefront space on West Main Street which she expanded just weeks ago.

While having her own storefront shop was always a goal, her time at Bella Forte laid the groundwork for her shop today which includes not only jewelry, but clothing and handbags.

“Now I’m a full blown boutique,” said McSweeney.

Not one to sacrifice quality for price, McSweeney only buys products that she has inspected in person as she aims to provide customers quality, trendy items. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the prices are through the roof.

“I don’t think there is anything in my boutique over $50,” said McSweeney.

With plans to eventually incorporate yoga and comfort wear into OneSixteen Bijour, ultimately McSweeney hopes that when shoppers step foot inside her store they find something not only for themselves, but for someone else too.

“My goal is to be ‘gifty’,” said McSweeney. “It’s the kind of place where you can not only find something that you like, but something for a girlfriend as well.”

Business Specialty: Nameplate necklaces of which McSweeney has sold more than 400.
