History of business: Da Kine Smoke Shop owner George Becerra wasn’t always a tobacconist. Becerra used to own Blasting Zone Inc., a tattoo shop adjacent to his new downtown smoke shop.

“When we were there, we always wished there was a smoke shop nearby,” Becerra said.

Becerra sold the tattoo shop, but six months later found himself sitting at home bored. His thoughts turned back to the smoke shop he had dreamed of, and Becerra decided to call his former landlord to see if a downtown space was available.

Da Kine Smoke Shop opened to the public on Jan. 1, and business has been great, Becerra said.

Business specialty: Da Kine Smoke Shop offers a wide variety of tobacco products, from cigarettes to hookah tobacco, e-cigarette cartridges, and an extensive selection  of fine cigars. A range of glass pipes is also on offer, blown by a friend of Becerra’s.

“We cater to everybody,” Becerra said.

And the shop harkens back to Becerra’s tattoo days with a selection of tattooing equipment and a large collection of Sullen Clothing. The brand offers shirts bearing the designs of some of the top tattoo artists in the world, and Da Kine is the only distributor of Sullen this side of Fresno, Becerra said.
