Despite a global pandemic, the fireworks booth operated by the local Father Heslin Council of the Knights of Columbus this summer was a success. On Sunday, the organization presented two $4,000 checks to Father Pat Walker of Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart School Principal Sara Michelina as a result of funds raised by the booth on East Avenue. During a socially-distanced, outdoor service, Grand Knight Larry Faria, Deputy Grand Knight Randy Altheide and Past Grand Knight Gil Esquer were on hand to present the funds to Walker and Michelina.

A recurring theme at the opening night of the 2025 Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock — the 107th edition of the annual event — was the heat. Sure, it's not 108 degrees like last year, but 102 on Friday afternoon wasn't too far off.
