A fire of unknown origin charred a vacant duplex in Turlock early Friday morning.

The fire was reported at 5:30 a.m. Friday at a duplex at 891 Park Street. Turlock Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene and attempted contact at 891 and the adjoining 893 residence. The residents at 893 had evacuated and told officers the 891 unit had been vacated a few days prior.

The first fire crews to arrive from the Turlock Fire Department found a few flames and heavy smoke coming from the one unit. They also had to deal with downed, live electrical lines caused by the fire. Once this hazard was mitigated, firefighters entered the residence and were able to quickly locate and contain the fire within 20 minutes.

Turlock Fire responded with three engines, Squad 32, one battalion chief, one division chief, the Fire Marshal, and the Fire Chief. Ceres Fire provided mutual aid assistance at the scene with one engine company and one battalion chief while Turlock Rural Fire provided coverage for the City of Turlock for the duration of the incident.

Any inquiries or information regarding this incident can be addressed by contacting the Fire Marshal at 669-2119.
