Pipe band takes first

The Turlock Police and Fire Pipe Band won first place at the recently held Bakersfield Highland Games Band competition.

The band only formed two years ago and typically such awards are not given to bands with less than 10 years experience, said band director Tom Robinson.

“This is a wonderful start to the season and we will have to work very hard to maintain that outcome throughout the rest of the year,” Robinson said. “The contests get tougher as we move forward, however, we will put up a good fight and do our very best.”

The band is a non-profit organization and plays at different events throughout the year. The cost for outfitting the band is substantial, and they hope to be able to build their finances in order to offer more community events and benefit the youth programs.
