Billy Joe Mills

Billy was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Harvey and Lillian Mills and passed away after a sudden illness at the age of 86.  He was the second of three children.  His family settled in Hughson and Billy graduated from Hughson High School and excelled in basketball and baseball.  He also attended MJC and then went on to proudly serve in the Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953.  Billy was a Medical Technician with the 121st Evac Hospital.  He was awarded with a Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, a United Nations Service Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Upon his return to Hughson in 1953, he married Irene Burrow and together they shared 60 years of marriage until her passing in August of last year.  Billy worked for the California Peach Association while farming peaches and walnuts and later planting almonds.  He also coached sports and his knowledge and influence are still remembered today by many.  He retired in the early 1990’s.  Billy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  His hobbies included golf and fishing.  He will always be remembered for his infectious smile, incredible work ethic and loving heart.

He is survived by his children: Rhonda Mills of Hughson, Jim (Pat) Mills of Hughson, Leslee (Marty) Jakosa of Turlock; grandchildren: Morgan Costa, Renee (Tom) Fanelli, Brianna Jakosa, Anthony Jakosa, Jodi (Chad) Smith, Will (Cristal) Caldwell; and four great grandsons, Hunter, Brody, Brady and Hayden.  He is also survived by his brother Farrell Mills.

Billy was preceded in death by his wife Irene Mills, parents Harvey and Lillian Mills and sister Cornelia Little.

The family wishes to thank Mary Keaton and the dedicated staff at Bethel Assisted Living Facility for their loving care and kindness shown to Billy over the past year.

A service will be held on Monday, July 6th at Allen Mortuary in Turlock at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
