Charlene was born in Ashland, Kentucky to Charles and Addie Lawson in 1920 and is one of six children. She spent her childhood living in several West Virginia towns and graduated from Parkersburg High School. If you asked her where she was from she'd always say she was proud to be a West Virginia mountaineer.
She married Harry Max Hadley of Marietta, Ohio in 1936 and together had three children. In 1963 Max was killed in an accident and afterward she moved to Reno, Nevada with Daniel and Patrick where she had good friends; Michael was in college in Ohio.
In 1968, she settled in Turlock, CA with husband Robert Lambright, a professor at Stanislaus State University. Never one to slow down, Charlene went back to school in 1979 and earned a degree in nursing becoming an LVN. She worked in Turlock at Phoenix House and at Emanuel Hospital. One of Charlene's most memorable experiences was traveling to Europe two times with a group of college students from Stanislaus State.
Although she was more than twice their age, she made friends and fit right in with the young group. She later married Raymond Devenport of Turlock and they enjoyed many wonderful years together. Charlene enjoyed playing bridge, volunteering at the public library, traveling and visiting with her wonderful friends and relatives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Turlock.
She is survived by her children Michael Hadley of Sedona, AZ, Daniel Hadley of Cincinnati, OH, and Patrick Hadley of San Diego, CA, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and her brother Don Lawson of Norcross, GA. Charlene is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Harry Max Hadley and Robert W. Lambright, her loving husband Raymond Devenport and siblings Wilamine, Virginia, Charles and Fred.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., August 13th at Samaritan Village in Hughson, CA. Charitable donations may be made in Charlene's name to The Fisher Center For Alzheimer's Research Foundation, One Intrepid Square, West 46th Street & 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10036; www.alzinfo.org/.
