Deolinda Fontes de Sousa passed away in Turlock on September 27, 2011 surrounded by her family. She was 87 years old.
Deolinda was born in Fajã dos Bodes, São Jorge, Azores Islands, on December 2, 1923 and came to the United States in 1965. She lived in Modesto and Turlock.
She is preceded in death by her husband António Jorge de Sousa (1959), and several brothers and sisters.
She leaves 7 sons and 3 daughters. In birth order they are Maria Fernandina Carvalho and husband Artur of Modesto; Armelim Fontes Sousa and wife Madalena of Turlock; José Arlindo Sousa and wife Connie of Turlock; Deacon John Fontes Sousa and wife Maria of Hanford; Sebastian Fontes Sousa and wife Zulmira of Turlock; Father Manuel Fontes Sousa, Pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, in Turlock; Jorge Fontes Sousa and wife Noelia of Turlock; Filomena Sousa Bettencourt and husband John of San Jose; Frank Fontes Sousa and wife Diane of Rhode Island; and Isabel Fontes Sousa of Fremont. She also leaves 23 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are António Fontes of Winton, Serafina Fontes Brasil of Escalon, and Isabel Fontes Silveira of Hughson.
The services will take place at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, 2602 South Walnut Road, in Turlock. The rosary will be Friday, September 30, at 7:00 pm, and the Mass of Christian burial Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be Friday from 10:00AM-4:00PM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, 286 West Main, Turlock. The services will be a celebration of gratitude to God for the life of Deolinda. She lived a life of service to her family, to her parish community, and to the Lord. She lived a life rooted in Christian values. Her legacy will live on.
