Donald Monroe Toombs’ death on May 13, 2010, at the age of 96, took from our midst the great shining star of the Toombs family. Born Dec. 13, 1913 in White Oak, Mo. to Ray and Gladys Toombs, Don was the oldest of seven siblings. Ray and Gladys moved to California with their young family
in 1920, where Don grew up and became an accomplished musician. He played the first trombone in several big bands of the time.
Don was sent to the Philippines with the US Navy during World War II, where he was stationed for four years.
Don was a contractor, whose craftsmanship was sought after and admired. It was his talent and love for this industry that inspired him to move with his wife Betty to Lake Tahoe to build his dream home in 1972, a beautiful wood beamed home at the top of a mountain overlooking the lake.
Don had a brilliant sense of humor and a love for life. His many hobbies included music, flying, boating and traveling. He became a member of Jim’s Big Band in Turlock at the age of 85.
Don is survived by his son, Gary Toombs (Pam) of Turlock; two grandchildren, Dan Toombs (Caroline) of Low Worsall, England and Tracee Storms (Kevin) of Turlock; and great grandchildren, Andrew, Erik and Matt Storms, and Katy, Joe and Jennifer Toombs. He also leaves behind sister, Carole Pellatier of Walnut Creek. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Toombs.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18 at Allen Mortuary. A private memorial service and interment in a family plot will be held at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, Calif.
