In her Denair home on October 6, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family, Doris Lorene Herr made her heavenly journey into the resting arms of her Savior, whom she loved and trusted with all her heart.  Thus, she completed a journey of 100 years, six months, and 28 days.

Doris Lorene Hamlow was born in Waverly, Nebraska on March 8, 1917.  She was the eighth of nine children born to the late Oscar and Grace (Anderton) Hamlow.  At the age of four, Doris, her parents, and seven siblings moved to Denair, California.  Doris began her education early on and attended, Gratton and Fairacres Schools, Hughson High School, and Modesto Junior College.  She went on to San Jose State University where she earned her teaching credential.  She spent two years teaching in Crows Landing, and 24 years at Denair Elementary School.

On September 15, 1940, she married the love of her life, Dwight Herr.  She cherished her 53 years as the wife of a peach farmer, until Dwight’s death in 1993.

Doris loved the Lord with all of her heart.  She found bliss in reading, and memorizing scripture.  Doris served faithfully at the Denair Missionary Church in the children and women’s ministry. For the past 25 years her faith was enriched as a member of the Denair Friends Church.

Doris had the gift of hospitality and loved to entertain.  Everyone who crossed her threshold was greeted with open arms, a big smile, and a twinkle in her eyes.  She brought beauty and unconditional love into the lives of those who entered hers.  Even to the end she could not resist a game of cards, of which she loved to win.  For the sick Doris was the ultimate comforter, and even to the end cared for ailing family members.

Traveling was a joyous occasion in Doris’ life.  She visited all 50 states, Europe, and the Holy Land.  She especially enjoyed visiting Hawaii and the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Grounds.

Doris is survived by her loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law Dorene and Richard Dobbins of Sacramento, California.  She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends and family whom she loved dearly.   In addition to her parents and husband, as the last of her generation of the Hamlow family, she is preceded in death by her five brothers, Oswald (Pauline), Andrew (Alice), Hector, Alfred, and Manny (Dorothy), and her three sisters Irene (Alvin) Oyer, Faye (Arthur) Phelps, and Mertis (Robert) Nolt as well as her sister and Brother-in-law Miriam (Herr) and Arnold Burnett, two nieces and three nephews, a great-niece and three great-nephews.  The family would like to thank Lois Kuffel and Covenant Care Hospice for their excellent care of Doris.

Visitation is from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway, Turlock.  Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday October 21, 2017 at the same location.  A reception will follow at the Denair Friends Church, 4033 N. Gratton Rd, Denair. Donations in her memory may be made to the Denair Friends Church 4033 N. Gratton Rd, Denair, CA 95316 or the Turlock Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1231 Turlock, CA 95381

Doris would not want tears, she never wanted to be cheated out of one day in Heaven.  The kindly lady in pink, has hung up her apron, and arrived.  Doris will be there to welcome the rest of us, with her ever open arms, when we make that same journey.
