John Daniel Mendes, age 89, passed away on April 30, 2022 in Mariposa, California. John was born in Hilmar, California on November 19, 1932 to Manuel Mendes and Elia Mello. He grew up in the Turlock area and attended schools in Hilmar. John worked as a dairy farmer for most of his life before retiring at the age of 62. Before working as a dairy farmer, he owned a sports shop and freight run in Alaska where he lived for 10 years.

John loved fishing and gardening. He enjoyed playing cards and the occasional trip to the casino. He was a devote Catholic. John was preceded in death by his siblings, Manuel, Emily, and Frances Mendes.

John is survived by his children, Daniel Mendes, Loraine Ontok, and Maria Medina; multiple grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2022 at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock, CA 95380 in the Main Chapel. Following the visitation, a recitation of the rosary will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Chapel. After the rosary, a funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Main Chapel. Following the services, John will be laid to rest at Turlock Memorial Park, 575 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock, CA 95380.
