Robert Hugh Strickler

Robert was born in San Bernadino, CA to Hugh and Hazel Strickler.  In 1938, the family moved to Hilmar. Robert attended Fairview Elementary and Hilmar High, graduating in 1946.  

He was involved with the family farm until 1950. Then Robert joined the US Navy and served for four years on the USS Hector repair ship during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.

In 1954, Robert married Carol Nestor.  They had 36 wonderful years together until her death in 1990. They had two sons, Dale Strickler and Danny Strickler.  During this time, Robert worked for Martinez Plywood Co.  In 1969, Robert became self-employed in several grocery and hardware businesses. In 1977, Robert obtained his general contractors license and built several custom homes in Turlock and the surrounding areas. 

Robert was a member of the Turlock Masonic Lodge receiving his degrees in 1950.  He received his 50-year pin in 2000.  Robert was also a member of the Scottish Rite in 2000 and received his 32nd Degree.  He joined Aahmes Shrine in 2000 and later the Turlock Shrine Club where he became president in 2003.  He was also a member of the Modesto, Oakdale and Westside Shrine clubs.

Robert was instrumental in the construction of the Turlock Masonic Lodge elevator, an endeavor he undertook without compensation.  Robert would later receive the Hiram Award for outstanding service to the Masonic organization, an award he was very proud of.

In 1991, on Robert’s birthday he married Barbara Tate and inherited three more sons, Alan Tate, Craig Tate and Michael Tate.  Barbara introduced Robert to ballroom dancing and they danced competitively, whenever they could, until Barbara’s death in 2013.  Robert also built a new home that they both enjoyed very much and lived in the rest of their lives.

In addition to Carol and Barbara, Robert is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Doris.

He is survived by his brother Edward Strickler, sons Dale Strickler (Loretta) and Danny Strickler, stepsons Alan Tate (Diane), Craig Tate and Michael Tate (Michelle) 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, January 12 at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway in Turlock.  A service will be held at 11am on Thursday, January 13 at Turlock Memorial Park Mausoleum.
