Cal State Stanislaus cross country runners Joey Nunes and Denali Foldager unleashed statement races on Saturday.
Nunes won the men’s 8K run in 22 minutes, 5 seconds at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational in Seaside, while Foldager captured the women’s 6K in a time of 17:21. The two were considered the fastest on their respective teams entering this season, but now there’s proof.
The conference even noticed. Foldager and Nunes were both named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Female and Male Runners of the Week, it was announced Monday.
In the season’s first race, the Warriors also had other standouts. Dawson Vorderbruegge finished third in the men’s run in 22:20, while Denali’s twin sister, Rubye, came in fifth with a time of 18:03. Both CSU Stan teams finished second behind San Francisco State in the standings.
“We are pleased with the results of our first invitational this season,” Stanislaus coach Diljeet Taylor said. “We got an idea of where we are now as a team and what we have to do for next week.”
Stanislaus’ next meet is the CCAA Preview at Humboldt State on Saturday.

Yet another shutout
Scoring is fun, but it seems like the CSU Stan women’s soccer team gets more joy from not allowing a single score. The Warriors are making this practice a habit after shutting out Northwest Nazarene 4-0 in Nampa, Idaho, on Monday.
The Warriors improved to 4-0-0 in the regular season, recorded their fourth straight regular season shutout and outscored opponents 13-0 in six total matches, including two exhibitions. Their efforts — which also included a 1-0 win in double overtime against Central Washington on Saturday — landed them the No. 7 spot in the West Region poll.
Stanislaus begins CCAA action at Sonoma State on Friday at 3 p.m.
