As a 14-year-old freshman, Lily Dizon may be one of the youngest student-athletes in the Pitman High School wrestling room, but her skills on the mat and endless stream of confidence has her dominating opponents through the first few weeks of the 2023-24 wrestling season.
This past weekend at the Webber Lawson Tournament at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, she pinned all five of her opponents in the very first period as she ran away with the 100-pound first-place medal.
“I always expect it of myself,” she said. “I just have to be confident out there. I can't second guess myself. The competition out there, it’s good.”
In her first match against Abigail Maguire of Willow Glen (San Jose), she earned a fall just 27 seconds into the match. In the second round, she pinned Chavelia Michael Medina of Justin Gara (Fresno) in 52 seconds. Her quarterfinal match against Kiana Lien of Mountain View wrapped up in 2:42, while she finished her semifinal match against Vanessa Rocha of Alisal (Salinas) in 2:53. The championship match against Lina Qvarfordt-Zhai of Lynbrook (San Jose) was her most dominant showing of the weekend, earning a pin after just 13 seconds of action.
Dizon has started her high school wrestling career with a 13-0 record. She believes that the dominance she has displayed early on is just a sneak peak at what’s to come for the next four years.
“I want to push myself to be a four-time state champion. Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior years I want to be a state champion in all my years here,” she said. “Some of these girls are older than me, but I just have to go out there and do my thing.”
