Friday Night Football

·         Denair (1-0) at Bret Harte in Angels Camp, 7:30 p.m.

·         Enochs (1-1) at Hilmar (2-0), 7:30 p.m.

·         Pitman (1-1) at Skyline (0-0) in Oakland, 7:30 p.m.

·         Turlock (2-0) vs. Davis at Johansen High in Modesto, 7:30 p.m.

·         Turlock Christian (0-1) vs. Elliot Christian (0-1) at Lincoln High in Stockton, 7 p.m.

During the summer, Hilmar High football coach Frank Marques posted on the CIF Web site requesting teams to play during the Yellowjackets’ preseason schedule. He had no agenda, no particular requests. In other words, he didn’t want to discriminate against any teams.

It didn’t matter the division. It didn’t matter the opponent. His team just wanted to play.

He ultimately landed one of the toughest preseason schedules in Hilmar High history, affording three Division I schools and a determined Ceres High team. And two games in, the Yellowjackets (2-0) have proven they can compete with anyone in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Their next assignment is the Enochs High Eagles, another D-I team the Yellowjackets will welcome to their football stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Eagles (1-1) are coming off a close 20-18 loss to Buhach Colony High.

Hilmar is on a hot streak after defeating Beyer High — the Yellowjackets’ first-ever D-I opponent in the modern era — in the season opener two weeks ago and earning a thrilling comeback victory over Ceres on Friday night.

Against Ceres, the Yellowjackets were down by 20 points in the second half before producing a historic turnaround to win 21-20. Isaac Diaz totaled two touchdowns and an important interception, and quarterback Andrew Olson completed 6-of-11 passes for 63 yards and one TD.

After Ceres, the Yellowjackets will face their third D-I school in Buhach Colony before starting Trans-Valley League play.

Pitman looking for consecutive road wins

The Pitman High Pride managed to pull off quite a stunner at Antioch High last week, considering the circumstances they were in before the game started. They were missing six of their starters, but still came away with a 23-13 win in nonconference action.

The Pride (1-1) will be faced with another road challenge this Friday, as they take on Skyline High in Oakland at 7:30 p.m. Skyline has yet to play a game.

The Pride played Skyline last season and came away with a 42-6 win.

Denair, TC and Turlock to play away

The remaining area teams will all play away from home, and all of them have their own unique storylines.

Turlock looks to win its third straight game against Davis High at Johansen High in Modesto. Turlock Christian wants to bounce back from its season-opening loss by topping Elliot Christian at Lincoln High in Stockton. And Denair plans to continue its high-scoring ways at Bret Harte in Angels Camp. All games are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday except for the TC game, which begins at 7.
