The Pitman Pride (10-2) was shut out by Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove (11-1) Friday night, falling 45-0 in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs to end their season.
The Pride trailed 17-0 after the first quarter, 31-0 at the half, and 38-0 at the third at the Sheldon High School field in Sacramento.
MaxPreps Freeman Computer projections had Pitman as a heavy, 42-21, underdog entering the contest. MaxPreps also ranked the SJS D1 playoff bracket as the fifth-toughest high school football playoff bracket in the nation.
Pleasant Grove entered the playoffs as the No. 2 overall seed, after winning the Delta River League, and as the No. 3 ranked D1 team in Northern California by Freeman Computer Rankings. Pleasant Grove also won the D1 SJS championship in 2010, beating crosstown rival Monterey Trail 21-6.
This season marked No. 7 seed Pitman’s sixth ever trip to the playoffs. The Pride’s 35-14 first-round win over West of Tracy on Nov. 10 secured Pitman’s third visit to the second round of play – and the first 10 win season in school history.
