The rainy weather let up just in time for the start of the spring sports season for local high schools.

Getting ready for the season this week were two college-bound senior pitchers — Bulldogs lefty Payton Hawkinson, who signed with Cal State Fullerton, and Turlock Christian southpaw Gavin Farinha, who signed with the Master’s College in Santa Clarita.

Farinha is an athlete to watch. He led the nation last year with six no-hitters and was one of 12 pitchers in the country to have a 0.00 ERA.

Despite the pleasant weather, the Eagles baseball team practiced at their indoor training facility. TC Coach Bill York put his players through their paces.

Turlock baseball opens the season with a scrimmage against Manteca on Feb. 17 at Mark de la Motte Field. Pitman baseball’s season starts with a scrimmage against Manteca on Feb. 22 at home. Turlock Christian baseball opens play at Ripon Christian on Feb. 27.
