The Central California Conference wrestling championships took place at Golden Valley High this past Friday and Turlock and Pitman High dominated.

Pitman won the tournament itself with a team score of 241 and five first place finishes, while Turlock followed in second with 204 points, including four first place results.

However, Turlock claimed the overall CCC title. Turlock finished with 10 points, Pitman nine and El Capitan with eight in overall CCC standings.

“I’m pumped for the kids, we wrestled really well,” said Pitman head coach Adam Vasconcellos. “Five champs and eight finalists. Our kids battled it was exciting to finally get our whole team wrestling well. Last year was probably our best year in school history and we scored around 250 points. This year we almost matched it with 241.”

Combined, Turlock and Pitman advance 24 kids to Divisionals.

For Turlock, their four individual champions consisted of William Giron (108), Adrian Heras (122), Breck Jeffus (184) and Mike Jeffus (HWY).

Turlock’s other qualifiers — 11 in total — included Gio Villegas (115), Manny Conde (134), Joe Silva (140), Lance Couchman (162), Cameron Machado (197), Javier Mendoza (220) and Diego Cornejo (147).

“Eleven advancing is pretty darn good considering we were missing two starters that would have been finalists at their respective weight classes,” said Turlock head coach Mike Contreras.

The Pride of Pitman qualified 13 for Divisionals, including one alternate.

Pitman’s five champions included Sammy Silveira (132), Kendall La Rosa (145), Jesus Padilla (170), Brendan Tallent (195) and Isaiah Perez (220).

The other qualifiers include Trey Peacock, Logan Rabenberg, Cesar Tellez, Nolan Lok, Tony Olide, Chris Sweet Avina, Jaron Azevedo and Carlos Martinez. Mark Jiminez is the alternate.

Denair, Delhi and TC advance nine to Divisionals

The Southern Athletic League wrestling tournament took place from Orestimba High this past Saturday with athletes from Delhi, Denair and Turlock Christian High all earning berths in the Divisional tournament.

A total of nine wrestlers combined will advance to the Divisional tournament.

Two Denair wrestlers advanced in Cody Martinez (126), who placed third, and Jonathon Parker (160), who also finished in third place.

Delhi’s Zech Ybarra (285) placed first and advanced. Andrew Quijano (126), who placed second as a sophomore will also be moving on, and Sebastian Romero (113) placed third as a freshman and will be advancing.

With four wrestlers on their roster, TC placed fifth out of eight teams while four advanced to Divisionals after a standout afternoon.

Desmond Barron (160) placed first in his bracket as well as Saint Sung (195).

Asa Schnurstein finished second in the 113-pound bracket, while Jakob Skinner (152) finished in third place.

“All four are going to the Divisional meet,” said TC head coach David Schnurstein. “I’m very happy. My only downer was Asa lost to a three-time champion and MVP, 6-3. Jake’s weight class was loaded but he wrestled well. Adam Ramiro of Orestimba beat Asa. Adam is a good wrestler and a good kid.”
