Playhouse Merced opens Rock of Ages tonight for a four week run.

The hit musical “Rock of Ages” is opening at Playhouse Merced tonight for a four week run.

Set at the tail end of the 1980s, “Rock of Ages” is the story of Drew, an aspiring rock star who currently finds himself cleaning the facilities at one of the last rock venues on the Sunset Strip. Drew has big dreams of rock stardom and a big love for Sherri, the small town girl with big ambitions of her own.

The rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into a strip mall. Drew, Sherri, and the gang set out to save the Strip -- and themselves — with the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more guiding them along their endeavor.

Taking on the role of Drew is Matt Cantue and Sherri is being played by Rachel Pearre. Additional cast members include: GB Blackmon III, Chad Phillips, Dianne Kocher, Meganne Ward-Kocher, Matt Capron, Chris Ingle, and Ron Daily.

The show is rated T for teens and older.

The show runs through Sept. 25. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $20 and are available at playhousemerced.com or at 725-8587.
