A suspected burglar likely thought he had picked out a good home to target, but instead he got punched by the homeowner and arrested by the police.

The suspect, identified as John Roberts, 37, broke into a home in the 1000 block of Boxwood around 3:30 p.m. Monday by prying open a door to the residence, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Russ Holeman.

Roberts was reportedly busy gathering up a multitude of items he planned to steal when the male resident arrived at home.

Caught in the act by the homeowner, Roberts tried to make a quick exit but the homeowner acted quicker.

The homeowner punched the victim once and then pinned him to the ground. He kept the suspect there until police officers arrived and took Roberts into custody, Holeman said.

Roberts was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.
