Detectives name person of interest in rest stop death

Detectives are asking for assistance in locating 64-year-old Cheryl Ruth Liberty of Modesto.

Investigators are seeking an individual they have deemed a “person of interest” in the case of a woman who died at a Turlock rest stop.

Detectives are asking for assistance in locating 64-year-old Cheryl Ruth Liberty of Modesto. Liberty is listed as a person of interest in the death of Christina Cardoza, 41, of Merced. Cardoza previously resided in Turlock, Hilmar, and Modesto.

Cardoza was found around 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Enoch Christoffersen rest stop area on northbound Highway 99. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and gave her aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s spokesman Keith Rakoncza said Cardoza sustained an injury earlier that day near Campbell Boulevard and Winton Parkway in Livingston. It is unknown at this time if this injury is related to the cause of death.

The cause of death is pending the autopsy and toxicology report which takes four to six weeks, Rakoncza said.
