A fight on the streets of Keyes on Tuesday left one man with a gunshot wound and a teen arrested for the shooting.

The shooting was reported to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 7th Street and Jennie Avenue in Keyes.

When deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect was involved in a fight in the roadway. Another man was able to break up the fight, but that’s when the 15-year-old turned and allegedly shot the victim in the stomach.

The victim was transported to the hospital before deputies arrived and, according to the Sheriff’s Department, he is expected to survive.

The suspect was identified as a 15-year-old male from Keyes, and he fled the scene before deputies arrived. Deputies began searching for the suspect, and he was found in an orchard in the 5700 Block of Washington Road where he was taken into custody.

The suspect was booked at juvenile hall for assault with a deadly weapon. He was also arrested for elder abuse stemming from a December 2017 investigation where he was accused of striking an elderly family member.

The Sheriff’s Department is an active participant in the Crime Stoppers Program. Callers can leave an anonymous tip at (209) 521-4636.
