shooting homicide
Alfonso Cervantes, 44, of Turlock called the police and told them he had shot a woman.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a Turlock man for murder after he allegedly called police dispatch and reported shooting a woman and leaving her body in an area of north Modesto.

Alfonso Cervantes, 44, of Turlock was booked into the Stanislaus County jail on a charge of homicide, according to the sheriff’s department.

The incident began at 2:50 a.m. Sunday when the Oakdale Police Department dispatch received a call from Cervantes saying he had shot a woman. Cervantes was calling from the parking lot of the closed KMart in Oakdale. Oakdale police officers responded to the parking lot and took Cervantes into custody. The case was turned over to the sheriff’s department after it was determined the shooting took place in their jurisdiction.

The sheriff’s department, along with the Escalon Police Department, searched the area where Cervantes said the shooting happened and found the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s name has not been released pending next of kin notification. Her body was found near McHenry Avenue, north of Stewart Road.

The sheriff’s department said Cervantes and the woman knew each other, but didn’t provide any additional information on their relationship or any motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Dave Hickman at 525-7042.
