Turlock man suspected in DUI crash

A Turlock man is facing criminal charges after causing a collision while allegedly under the influence and then fleeing the scene.

The suspect was identified by the California Highway Patrol as Jose Arriega-Partida, 34, of Turlock. He was booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of felony driving under the influence and hit and run.

The CHP said the collision was a direct result of Partida passing another vehicle in an unsafe manner.

The collision happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 165, near Echo Street.

Partida was driving a 2007 Lexus northbound on the highway behind another vehicle. Partida attempted to pass the other vehicle by moving into the left lane, which his when his vehicle struck a 2003 Nissan Frontier that was making a left turn onto Echo Street, according to the CHP.

Partida fled from the scene of the crash, but CHP officers were able to track him down at his residence. He was brought back to the scene and was found to be intoxicated, the CHP report stated.

Partida sustained minor injuries from the crash and was treated at Emanuel Medical Center before being released and booked into jail. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was still in custody in lieu of a $210,000 bail.

The driver of the Nissan was identified as George Corales, 55, of Hilmar. He had a complaint of pain and stated he would seek his own medical treatment.
