Oscar-nominated actor Jeremy Renner will be honored as Modesto Junior College’s Distinguished Alumnus for 2010 at the college’s 6 p.m. April 30 Commencement Ceremony.
Renner will receive a plaque for the honor and have his name added to the perpetual plaque of Distinguished Alumnus on display in MJC’s Founders Hall.
Renner is best known as the star of 2010 Academy Award Best Picture winner “The Hurt Locker.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated him as Best Actor for the role of Sgt. James, a bomb-disposal expert in present-day Baghdad.
For his performance, Renner was awarded the Breakthrough Actor Award at the Hollywood Film Festival, the Spotlight Award at the Savannah Film Festival and was nominated as Best Actor at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards. He also was nominated for Breakthrough Actor and for Best Ensemble Performance at the Gotham Awards.
Renner was a theatre and psychology double major at MJC, where he starred in productions of “Orphans,” “Sister Gloria's Pentecostal Baby,” and the musical “The Wizard of Oz.”
