Under the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, the State of California is scheduled to start issuing commercial licenses to sell marijuana by Jan. 1, 2018, however, a cannabis shop will not be opening up in Turlock anytime soon.

The Turlock City Council voted on Tuesday to prohibit all commercial activities related to cannabis, including cultivation. The Council also prohibited cannabis deliveries within the City of Turlock.

Under the AUMA, residents of Turlock are permitted to grow six marijuana plants for personal recreational use using indoor cultivation.

The Council considered adopting personal cultivation regulations that would have seen residents of Turlock who wished to grow  their allotted six cannabis plants required to obtain a City permit and undergo onsite inspections of their indoor cultivation area. The proposed regulations also included lighting regulations and specifics for structures that would be allowed to be used for the cultivation of marijuana.

The Council decided to table the regulations at this time in favor of working together as part of a countywide committee on the issue.

"I think it is prudent for the City of Turlock to continue engagement at a regional level, at a Stanislaus County level," said Mayor Gary Soiseth about possible regulations on the cultivation of marijuana during a special workshop on the AUMA held Tuesday night.

"I think we need to present a united front within our county as to what we do," said Vice Mayor Bill DeHart, in agreement with Soiseth.

Adults may not smoke or ingest weed in public under AUMA, and It’s still illegal to smoke marijuana and operate a vehicle.
