Athletes from local wrestling clubs brought home several medals and All-American honors after competing in national tournaments last month.
From June 26-28, seven grapplers from the Turlock Wrestling Club and three from the Vasky Bros Wrestling Club traveled to Las Vegas to compete at the Rocky Mountain Nationals.
Michael Guiang, at 46 pounds, led Turlock Wrestling by becoming an All-American after winning the freestyle championship and finishing second in the folkstyle bracket.
Marcus Figueroa of Vasky Bros also earned All-American honors after winning the 52-pound bracket and placing fourth at 55 pounds.
Turlock Wrestling’s Jase Jauregui competed in two brackets, and recorded a third-place finish in the 61-pound freestyle competition and fourth in the 65-pound freestyle. Teammates RJ Gonzalez and Sophia Plascencia each placed third in freestyle at 65 pounds and 101 pounds, respectively. Ankido Peyour and Anthony Peyour wrapped up the medaling for Turlock by earning fifth-place finishes at 62 and 100 pounds, respectively.
Cayson Melo placed fight at 46 pounds for the Vasky Bros while teammate Rambo Jacuinde earned a sixth-place podium spot at 130 pounds,
During the same weekend, Turlock Wrestling’s Rhett Olson traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to compete at the USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals. Olson, the only wrestler from California competing in the 71-pound freestyle bracket, finished fifth and earned All-American honors.
