The California Transportation Commission has allocated $359 million to 36 projects in the state, including two in Stanislaus County.

The investment will create jobs bolstering the state’s economy, reduce traffic congestion, repair highways and bridges, and improve rail service, according to Caltrans.

“These projects allow millions of dollars to flow into construction and produce enormous economic benefits for California,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.

Bay Area Rapid Transit received $140 million from Proposition 1A, the high-speed rail bond, to purchase 46 new rail cars that will provide new service from the BART/Caltrain Millbrae Station directly to San Francisco International Airport.

The Millbrae facility is one of several key regional connectivity points California’s High-Speed Rail Authority has identified that will link BART and high-speed rail, creating a “blended” rail system. To handle additional transferring of passengers at Millbrae from the blended system longer trains will be needed. The $140 million will help pay to lengthen all three rail storage tracks at the south end of the station, enabling the facility to handle BART’s maximum train length of 10 cars and make it possible to run longer trains from the East Bay to the airport.

The allocations also included $44 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, nearly $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes. The remaining $175 million in allocations today came from various state and federal transportation accounts.

Other highlights of the CTC funding allocations include:

City of Modesto:  $43,800,000 —  Pelandale Interchange Project.  The project will reconstruct the State Route 99/Pelandale Avenue interchange and build auxiliary lanes.  The purpose of this project is to alleviate traffic congestion, improve traffic operations and safety, and accommodate future traffic forecast at SR-99 and Pelandale Avenue.

San Joaquin County:  $9,958,000 – SR-4 Bacon Island Rehabilitation Project.  The project will widen and upgrade roadway intersections, repave areas of distress, place shoulder and median rumble strips, and upgrade drainage facilities along 12 miles of roadway to improve traffic safety and ride quality.

Stanislaus County:  $4,090,000 – This project will widen Claribel Road to two lanes in both directions, add a center left turn lane, and construct a bike lane from SR-108 to Oakdale Road.  This project will also install traffic signal lights at the intersection of Claribel Road and Coffee Road.

San Joaquin County:  Double Track Project – This project will construct 3.8 miles of double track (one track in each direction) from the city of Escalon to Stockton.  This project will improve the efficiency and on-time performance of the intercity rail passenger services on the San Joaquin Corridor, which operates from Bakersfield to Oakland and Bakersfield to Sacramento.
