Years of remaining empty will no longer plague the old Hollywood Video location at 2641 Geer Rd., as Dollar General is making plans to move into the vacant building by the end of the year.

According to the City of Turlock Planning Department, the popular discount retailer has submitted plans to the Building Division for tenant improvements at the location meaning the distinct yellow and purple building will soon undergo a makeover.

Although the company is one of the largest discount stores with 10,000 locations across the nation, Dollar General prides itself in having small neighborhood stores no larger than 7,200 square feet to help make shopping simpler. At just 7,000 square feet, the vacant Geer building was chosen as one of the newest locations for a traditional Dollar General store.

By staying focused on providing “necessity-type” items such as cleaning supplies and toiletries, Dollar General says that the average customer spends only 10 minutes completing his or her shopping trip in their stores.

According to Dollar General Public Relations Manager Crystal Ghassemi, the new Geer location will employ six to 10 people depending on the individual need of the store, and is set to open by mid to late December after renovations are made to the existing building.

The Geer location is not the only new Dollar General store in Turlock, as a Dollar General Market opened at the old Sam’s Food City building at 965 Lander Ave. earlier this year. The grand opening for the General Dollar Market on Lander Avenue will be held on Oct. 5, with the first 50 adult customers receiving a $10 gift card and the first 200 customers receiving a goodie-bag filled with free giveaways.
