Emanuel Medical Center will soon offer life-saving cardiac services that they once deferred to other hospitals. The new Emanuel Cardiac Cath and Intervention Lab will give doctors the ability to treat patients with certain cardiac conditions.
“With heart disease, time is muscle,” said Dr. Reza Vafadouste, a Turlock cardiologist.
Vafadouste said that Emanuel Medical Center was previously able to stabilize and medicate heart patients, but they were unable to perform most emergency heart procedures. Cardio patients were sent to other surrounding hospitals for treatment once they were stabilized. A delay in some heart health services could lead to irreversible damage.
“Having services here can treat patients quickly and prevent that damage,” Vafadouste said.
The Emanuel Medical Cardiovascular Services Department will now offer a wide range of cardiovascular services, from stint replacement to angioplasty. For the first few months of operation, the Cardiac Cath and Intervention lab will not perform open heart surgery, but the procedure could be offered in the future.
The Cardiac Cath lab features several pieces of high-tech equipment that were not previously available at Emanuel. Doctors will have the ability to run diagnostic tests, get clear 3D images of patients’ hearts and even insert cameras into blood vessels. The equipment also stores patients’ heart sonograms and other test results digitally. This allows doctors to review test results and x-rays months or even years later.
“We don’t print out regular films anymore. We are even able to make a CD of some information if a patient needs to see another doctor,” said Jada Ayala, a technician in the Cardiac Cath lab.
The goal of the Cardiovascular Services Department is to bring a new array of cardiac and intervention radiology treatments to Turlock.
“Heart disease is the country’s number one killer of both men and women, and this new lab and Cardiovascular Services Department bring state-of-the-art equipment and treatments to Turlock for the very first time,” said Michael Iltis, Emanuel vice president of Professional Services.
Emanuel will open their Cardiac Cath and Intervention Lab to the public today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature a large constructed heart that visitors can walk through. Tours of the lab will also be available. Kids can also bring their teddy bears and other stuffed animals for a “heart to tail” check-up.
The tour will start at the walk-through heart outside of the hospital’s Garden Terrace cafeteria. The hospital asks that visitors park in the lots off of Colorado and Olive avenues behind the emergency department.
