Women over the age of 40 who do not have health insurance or who are underinsured may qualify for a free mammogram to screen for breast cancer at Emanuel Cancer Center.

With a $20,000 grant from the Safeway Foundation, Emanuel Cancer Center hopes to provide more than 100 women free mammograms and any necessary follow-up tests at its Ruby E. Bergman Women’s Diagnostic Center (located inside the cancer center).

“For women over 40, mammograms are an essential part of maintaining good health,” Michael Iltis, the Emanuel vice president who oversees the Emanuel Cancer Center. “Unfortunately, some women don’t have the resources to get screened when they should and that’s what we’re trying to address with this Safeway Foundation grant.”

Iltis urges women interested in the program not to delay.

“If you think you qualify, you should call right away,” he said. “We’ll serve as many women as possible, but this funding is limited and you don’t want to miss out.”
