Myanmar, a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, consists of many disaster-torn communities and poverty-stricken residents. Without help from non-profit organizations like Miles 4 Myanmar, many would otherwise starve to death.

Miles 4 Myanmar is hosting a fundraiser in Turlock where individuals can gather and race for a purpose, generating funds for the people of Myanmar.

Since 2008, Miles 4 Myanmar has helped the people of Myanmar in four ways: meals, medicine, mercy and music. The organization provides food resources for the children and workers of two orphanages, a school and many other citizens.

Miles 4 Myanmar also brings doctors and medicine to the country, helping residents with parasites that spread quickly within the country’s communities. The country is also often plagued with natural disasters such as typhoons, floods and illness outbreaks, prompting Miles 4 Myanmar to supply emergency food, medicine, transportation and rebuilding materials after natural disasters.

The organization has also been able to provide musical instruments and teachers to citizens, allowing them to sing and create their own music. Though, to provide these resources to the people of Myanmar, the organization needs help.

“In order to help raise funds and support, Miles 4 Myanmar has asked individuals from across the nation to walk or run in support of the ministry,” said race coordinator Corey Walker.

Over 20 races are being held across the nation, but on July 16 it will be Turlock’s turn to participate.

The race will kick off at 8 a.m. at 200 N. Broadway Ave. and costs $20 to participate. Families can register together for just $9 per person. After registration, racers will be sent a T-shirt, wristband and marketing materials to spread the word about the event.

Miles 4 Myanmar needs sponsors as well, said Walker. Sponsors can either donate a lump sum to the organization or sponsor a racer, donating money to Miles 4 Myanmar based on how many miles their racer runs or walks. The organization is also asking businesses to support their cause either through monetary donations or donation of supplies. In return, businesses can receive free advertising both on the Miles 4 Myanmar website and at the race itself.

To register for the race, visit www.miles4myanmar.com and click on the “Run or walk” button. On the next page, choose either to register as an individual or as a family.
