A Delhi man was killed Thursday night when he stepped in front of an oncoming vehicle.

The deceased was identified as 57-year-old Benjamin Jimenez by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Jimenez was walking southbound on Schendel Avenue near Hillside Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, Jimenez appears to have stepped onto the road, directly into an oncoming 2001 GMC Sierra that was traveling eastbound on Schendel.

The driver of the GMC, David Williams, 61, of Delhi, hit his brakes, but was unable to avoid striking Jimenez, the CHP reported.

Jimenez was transported by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The CHP said alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
