THS body slams cancer

Turlock Relay for Life teams won’t be walking for a cure until April, but fundraising for the event is in full swing. Teams are independently fundraising for the walk and Lisa Vorse, 2011 Relay chairperson, said the total fundraising goal is $200,000 this year.

In each of the last three years the Turlock High School Relay for Life Club has raised over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year the club hopes to break its own record with a live pro wrestling event featuring former World Wrestling & Entertainment star Gangrel. The wrestling event is scheduled to take place March 4 at Turlock High.

“This isn’t a typical Turlock event.  It will be a fun night for families to come out and enjoy something different. There will be plenty of entertainment and concessions will be cheap! And, the proceeds are going to a great cause…we are ‘body slamming’ cancer at THS,” said Riley Rubins, a THS senior and a four-year member of the Relay for Life club.

“Our goal is to sell 1,000 tickets,” said Relay For Life club advisor Kristin Bettencourt.

Tickets for the event start at $10 with ringside seats going for $15. A four-pack of seats cost $35 and all tickets purchased will enter the buyer into a raffle for an Apple iPad. Tickets can be bought by calling the THS Student Activity Office at 667-0797 or online at gzwrestling.net.

Other Relay for Life fundraising events include:

·         Team Constructing a Cure will be hosting a yard sale on March 5 at the VFW Hall to raise funds for Turlock Relay for Life. Donated items can be dropped off on March 4.

·         The Century 21 M&M Associates team will be cooking for a cure. Their fourth annual rib cook-off will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 1. They are still looking for rib cook-off teams, and interested participants can call 669-8000 for more information. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased over the phone or at the event.

·         Me & Ed’s Pizza is hosting a Relay for Life fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday. Thirty percent of proceeds from the evening will go to Relay for Life. The restaurant may choose one relay team and add the money to their total.

The Relay for Life walk is scheduled to take place April 16 and 17 at Dutcher Middle School in Turlock.
