A fifth wheel caught on fire Wednesday morning and erupted into a blaze that threatened to ignite the commercial buildings it was parked next to, the Turlock Fire Department reported.

The fire was reported just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at 1560 Venture Lane.

The first fire crews to arrive found the fifth wheel fully engulfed, with the flames stretching over the two story structure it was parked adjacent to, said Battalion Chief Gary Carlson.

The first reports of the fire indicated multiple trailers were ablaze, but it turned out it was only one and the fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes, Carlson said. Over haul and clean-up lasted about an hour. Three engines with a total of 13 fire personnel responded to the site.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an accident.

The trailer was completely destroyed in the fire, but there was no damage reported at the adjacent building. The fire damage to the trailer was estimated at $35,000.
