Sweets and crafty treats focus of February library events

Local libraries have a host of activity-based events set for February.

Turlock

Children, tweens and teens can make Friendship Blossoms at 4 p.m. Feb. 10. Crafters will create a “flower” using a lollipop as the flower’s center and heart shaped petals.

Teens and adults are invited to learn the fine art of chocolate tasting at 1 p.m. Feb. 14. Small samples of five different chocolates will be offered to participants, along with tasting guidelines. Registration is required as space is limited; call 664-8100 to sign up.

Tweens and teens can visit the library  at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 to make Candy Kiss Roses. Using Hershey’s Kisses, participants will craft “rose blooms” complete with floral tape and ribbons for a beautiful and tasty treat.

The library will hold a new craft program on the third Wednesday of every month, starting at 7 p.m. Feb. 18. This program, entitled “As Seen on Pinterest,” will feature crafts popular on the social media site. This month crafters will create decorative mugs and plates using paint pens. The program is recommended for ages 14 and older. Registration for this program is required as space is limited; call the Turlock Library at 664-8100 to register.

Children of all ages are invited to build LEGO displays for the library at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 24. LEGO play helps children learn basic mathematic and engineering skills in a fun, hands-on environment. Children under the age of 4 are welcome to participate, however, they must have direct parental supervision.

Keyes

The Keyes Library will offer free programs for all ages this February, beginning with the month-long “What’s Cooking” recipe exchange. Cooking enthusiasts may stop by the library to pick up the recipes of the month and drop off a recipe for a chance to have the recipe featured in March.

A Hershey’s Kiss Rose Craft for children, tweens and teens will take place at 1 p.m. Feb. 11. Crafters will learn how to turn Hershey’s Kisses into “roses” for Valentine’s Day. Tweens can stop by the library on at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 to make a festive Heart Wreath. These crafts are sponsored by the Friends of the Keyes Library.

The Crazy 8’s Math Club will meet in February at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays. “Toilet Paper Olympics” will be held on Feb. 10. Participants will learn how to measure distances through such activities as the toilet paper shot put, long jump, and relay race. During the “Toiler Paper Olympics” preschoolers may play with bouncy dice and learn basic concepts of probability. On Feb. 17 the library will host “Spy Training” in which children will solve coded messages, find treasure, encode their phone numbers, and solve puzzles. Children can learn about distances with the “Flying Marshmallow” program on Feb. 24 by building marshmallow catapults and slingshots using provided craft materials.

Denair

Local gardeners can enjoy a seed swap from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. Community members are encouraged to gather and label their leftover seeds to bring to the swap. This free program is an opportunity for people to acquire new seeds and gardening tips and strategies from others with similar interests. Gardening books will be on display and available for checkout.

Families can drop by the library on Feb. 12 between 2 and 4 p.m. to create unique greeting cards. Using the library’s craft materials, participants can design personalized cards for friends and family.

The library will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a craft at 3 p.m. Feb. 18. Children will learn how to make paper lanterns that they may take home.
