It was a wave of red a gold Saturday morning as hundreds of 49er fans flooded Pitman High for a community tailgate party in honor of Colin Kaepernick.
Under the banner of “Turlock Believes,” Kaepernick supporters enjoyed food and entertainment and got the chance to pose with a life size cutout of the hometown hero, meet his fourth grade teacher Mr. Sutterley, and choose from a variety of Kaepernick related merchandise.
“It’s a blend between surreal and entertainment,” Bret Sutterley said. “He’s doing what he’s supposed to be doing. He’s a good kid; this was his destiny.”
But it wasn’t just Turlock celebrating. Fans from Stockton, Fresno, and beyond journeyed to Pitman to experience a piece of 49er history; soaking in the moment on the eve of the Super Bowl at their quarterback’s stomping grounds. Those in attendance not only got the chance to experience history but they also had the opprotunity to forever be a part of it as they stood in line to sign a community banner that Pitman High’s Key Club will present to the second year quarterback after the big game.
“We want him to know how much we support him and his achievements,” Key Club member Aileen Ayala said.
Number 7 was everywhere at Saturday’s party for the community by the community— a sight that can be expected to be seen again all around Turlock on Sunday.
