Unemployment in Stanislaus County grows slightly

Merced County total employment grew 3.99%, the fastest among the San Joaquin Valley’s eight counties in 2021. Stanislaus County total employment grew the second fastest at 3.56%.

The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County took a little tick upwards in October, according to the latest data from the Employment Development Department.

The October unemployment rate in Stanislaus County was at 4.9 percent, up from a revised rate of 4.6 percent in September. The rate was below the year-ago estimate of 5.4 percent.

The increase in the county’s unemployment was attributed to a decline in the Manufacturing sector, which dropped by an estimated 2,100 positions for the month. The vast majority of the decline came in food manufacturing, according to the EDD. Food manufacturing dropped by 16.4 percent for the month.

The only other sector that posted a job decline for the month was Farming, which dropped by approximately 100 positions, according to the EDD.

Most of the sectors in Stanislaus County posted gains in employment or remained flat for the month. The Government sector had the largest gain with 1,400, the majority of which were at local school districts.

The sectors of Educational and Health Services and Trade, Transportation and Utilities each added an estimated 300 jobs for the month.

Merced County had an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent for the month, up from 5.5 percent in September. San Joaquin County’s unemployment rate in October was at 5 percent, up from 4.7 percent the month prior. California had an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent and the nation’s was at 3.3 percent for the same time frame.

Turlock’s unemployment rate rose to 4.1 percent in October, down from 3.9 percent in September. Denair’s rate was 2.7 percent in October, up from 2.5 percent in September. Hughson had an October rate of 5 percent, which was an increase from the 4.7 percent posted in September. Keyes saw a drop from 6.3 percent in September to 6.6 percent in October. Ceres had an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent in October, down from 5.2 percent in September.

The companies posting the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County for October were: Tenet Healthcare Corporation - 218; Yosemite Community College District - 151; Emanuel Medical Center - 104; Sutter Health - 97; E. & J. Gallo Winery – 78; Memorial Medical Center, Modesto - 67; Save Mart Supermarkets – 64; California State University System – 60; Ceres Unified School District – 57; and Patterson Joint Unified School District – 48.

The positions with the most help wanted ads in Stanislaus County in October were: Registered Nurses - 276; Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers - 242; Retail Salespersons - 241; First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers - 195; Maintenance and Repair Workers, General - 114; First-Line Supervisors of Food Preparation and Serving Workers - 112; Customer Service Representatives - 108; Security Guards - 106; Stock Clerks, Sales Floor - 103; and Stock Clerks- Stockroom, Warehouse, or Storage Yard – 92.
