The walkers are headed for downtown Turlock.

These are not the flesh craving undead from AMC’s hit television show “The Walking Dead” but rather mothers, fathers, seniors and anyone else interested in getting in some exercise while strolling through the downtown corridor.

On Tuesday the Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association will kick off their Downtown City Walks. The walkers will meet at Central Park next to the Turlock Chamber of Commerce each Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. The association has signed up a few personal trainers to lead the group in a quick warm-up and then they will be off for a brisk walk around downtown. The walk will last about an hour.

“I think this will be a great opportunity for people to socialize with one another, while getting some exercise and exploring all that downtown Turlock has to offer,” said TDPOA Executive Director Gina Loretelli.

TDPOA plans on having different sponsors each week, with treats and giveaways for the participants.

As an added incentive, the association is offering up a $1,000 donation to the club, school or church group that consistently brings in the most walkers each week through the end of the school year.

“This is a great way for an organization to earn some extra money,” Loretelli said.

The walk is open to anyone who wants to participate and no pre-registration is needed. TDPOA will register the groups the day of the walk to keep a tally for the year-end donation.
