‘Your gourmet apple connection’
The Apple Chick
The Apple Chick, Jodie Wilson, had booths at Turlock’s Christmas events, and can be found weekly at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).

History of business: Jodie Wilson describes herself as a “foodie,” and her love for making sweet, culinary creations couldn’t be more evident in her small business, the Apple Chick. It’s a business that she touts as “your gourmet apple connection.”

And gourmet apples are exactly what they are, as her menu includes a whopping 34 different types of caramelized deserts, featuring classic candies and flavors.

“It was purely trial and error,” Wilson explained. “I didn’t have any experience with caramel apples or making them, but I've always liked sweets.”

Wilson’s sweet tooth and creativity compelled her to start the business approximately eight years ago, as she brainstormed ways to help fundraise for her son’s eighth-grade trip.

“He was going to Turlock Junior High and he wanted to go on his eighth-grade trip and he needed $3,500,” Wilson said. “I thought, ‘Well, I could make caramel apples and sell them on Facebook to help raise some of the money.’ I ended up paying for almost the entire trip, and then after his trip was paid for, people still kept wanting to buy them, so I got my license and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Over the years, community members and visitors to Turlock, Denair and Modesto may have already spotted her around. She is most frequently found at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market and has set up in Downtown Turlock for several events, including this year’s Christmas celebrations. Additionally, she offers scheduled pickups in Denair.

“I love what I do and I love my customers,” said Wilson. “I have customers that drive for hours to come see me and pick up apples. I love when I'm at an event and they come up and they say they’re just here for me. It’s incredible.”

Some of her most popular apples are cheesecake, apple pie and classic caramel. Nevertheless, the Almond Joy apple is Wilson’s personal favorite. Right now, during the holiday season, she shared that the Christmas decorated apples have been some of her top sellers.
