Antonio Machado, 93, of Capitola passed away in Santa Cruz on March 17. He was born in San Carlos. 
“Tony,” as he was known by his friends and loved ones, was a graduate of Hilmar High School class of 1937. He married his wife Helen on March 30, 1940, and worked as a truck driver for over 40 years. Before retirement he also worked as a salesman for M&M Garage in Newman. 
A longtime resident of Newman and Gustine, Tony was a past supreme president of former S.E.S., which is now the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America. He was also a member of St. Anthony’s, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Gustine-Newman Senior Citizens, Cabrillo Club, Grey Bears of Santa Cruz and the Aptos Grange.  He was a reserve police officer in Newman.  Tony and Helen enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Portugal. He was a longtime San Francisco Giants fan. 
He is survived by his daughters, Marlene Cooper (Ben) of San Jose, Carol Lerno (Albert) of Santa Cruz and Nancy Petersen (Joe) of Gustine; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sisters, Mary and Angie Vierra, both of Hilmar; brother, Frank Machado (Karen) of Delhi; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son, Gary; sister, Elvera Fagundes; and his parents, Antonio and Marie Machado. 
A memorial Mass and Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles Church in Gustine.  A private interment is planned at the Turlock Memorial Park.  
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Helen and Tony Machado Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Nancy Petersen, 968 West Ave., Gustine, CA 95322.
