Charles L. Holmes
March 1944 - Aug, 2016
c32101 1

Charles Lester Holmes was born in March of 1944 in Modesto, California. He lived in Salida and attended local schools. He worked at the local drive-in theater while attending Modesto High School. Upon graduating, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for most of his tour of duty.

Upon his discharge, he returned to Salida and completed his education through the G.I. Bill and graduated from the Police Academy to join the Turlock Police Department where he served for almost 30 years, retiring as Police Commander. During this time, he was loaned to Waterford Police Department as Interim Police Chief, where he enjoyed updating the department’s technology, but returned to Turlock to finish his career.

After retiring from Turlock Police Department, he worked for Guyette Dodge and Turlock Auto Plaza, upgrading technology and completing dealer transactions. This allowed Charlie to drive the latest, fastest vehicles on the road that competed with his fishing plans. Latif’s Restaurant was retirement central for local farmers and business associates who were treated with kindness and respect, coffee and pie. Many thanks!

Charles was married to his Police Department sweetheart, Betty Heilman, of Turlock, for 43 years and raised his children: Greg Holmes of Tucson, Arizona and Beth Holmes of Jackson, Wyoming. Other survivors include his sister Iola Holmes of Escalon; brothers: Jesse Holmes of Salida, Ivan Holmes of Bakersfield, and Hiram Holmes of Modesto. He was predeceased by both parents and sisters Pam Markham and Geneva Lewis.

Visitation will be at Allen Mortuary on Thursday, Sept. 1st from 4 to 6 pm. Funeral Service at Allen Mortuary on Friday, Sept. 2nd at 1 pm. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
