Gary Wayne Lohman, 76, died unexpectedly on December 11th of complications from emergency surgery. He was born in Turlock (Delhi/Ballico) to Ernest and Lila (Runner) Lohman and lived there most of his life, but also lived in Manteca, Davis, Richland (WA),Pocatello, and Milwaukee.
Gary attended Livingston High School, where he was student body president, and excelled in basketball, hurdles, and the high jump. He studied Chemical Engineering at UC Davis, then attended graduate school at U of Idaho, obtaining an MSChE. He specialized in hazardous waste disposal, working for DoE Hanford, Simplot, Aerojet, Kleinfelder, and URS. After a full engineering career, he returned to take over his parents’ almond farm.
Gary loved the folk music of the 60s, and was inspired to learn guitar himself. He enjoyed skiing & even served on ski patrol. He was an early proponent of California wines, producing from his own Centurion vineyard. In retirement, Gary refined his woodworking skills, building furniture we’ll treasure for generations.
Gary was unfailingly supportive and encouraging to family & friends. After he passed, so many old friends contacted us to say he’d helped them & was a great friend. He was known at family gatherings for his cooking skills, especially his chocolate mousse torte. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion for wines with others.
He is survived by his sons Corey Lohman and Nate Lohman (Edna) and siblings Roger Lohman (Cheryl) from Hawaii and Irene Lohman Cardoza from Tennessee, along with the joy of his life, granddaughter Lara. A memorial service has been scheduled at Hilmar Cheese on February 4th, from 11 AM to 3 PM. All who knew him are welcome, and attire will be casual. Please email garylohmanmemorial@gmail.com for details. Rather than flowers, Gary would’ve preferred donations in his name to UC Davis.
