Mary M. Davis

Mary M. Davis, age 96, of Turlock, passed away peacefully at her apartment in Paramount Court on June 10, 2018.  Mary was the fourth of seven children born to Gottleib and Theresia Frey and grew up on the family farm in South Dakota. She left the farm in the early 1940’s and traveled to Berkeley, California where she met a handsome sailor, J.W. (Jay) Davis, who became her loving husband of 63 years until his death in 2009.  They lived in Berkeley, South Dakota and Iowa before settling in Turlock in 1950. They owned Penny Saver Market on Broadway Street and raised three children in their Turlock home.  Mary loved to work outside.  Her landscaping and vegetable gardens were immaculate and her backyard cherry and orange trees at her home on Elena Court were legendary.  All who knew her enjoyed the fruit, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and two sisters.  She is survived by her children Jeffrey Davis (Darlene), Janice Bishop (Greg), and Jack Davis (Ellen).  She is also survived by her loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters and many nieces and nephews.  Mary was laid to rest next to Jay on June 13.  Her memorial service will be held at Turlock Memorial Park Chapel on Saturday, July 21, at 11 am. Dress is casual and lunch will be served.
