Delhi soccer in playoffs after iffy start to the year

In the first few weeks of the 2015 season, the Delhi Hawks varsity boys soccer team was in a not so good situation after losing four of its first five games of the year.

But since the progression of the year has carried forward so has the Hawks ability to play up to their potential clinching a postseason berth with a 9-4-1 record in the Southern Athletic League after defeating Mariposa 3-0 in Thursday's regular season final game.

“I felt we had the best team in league, but it was close and tough...we just made mistakes and they capitalized or vice versa,” said Delhi head coach Armando Salazar. “That is what happened, all the games we lost were by one goal.”

It's a fact, in all four league losses, the Hawks of Delhi lost by only one lonesome goal, eventually settling into a third place position in the SAL.

“Once we started playing the positions we needed, we knew that overall they came together and played well,” said Salazar. “Just like I said, we just didn’t capitalize on chances early on but we learned from our mistakes.”

In the final nine games of the year, Delhi's record was 7-1-1.

“One game at a time and seeing how we play it depends, we can play great or lousy so we will see,” said Salazar.

Delhi will travel to Escalon to take on the number two seeded Cougars at 3 p.m. Thursday.
