Turlock, Pitman track and field athletes shine at league championships

Varsity track and field athletes competed for a chance to advance in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs following Tuesday’s Central California Athletic League Championships from Joe Debely Stadium.

Turlock qualified 28 athletes total and Pitman had 26, plus their girls and boys 4X1 and 4X4 relay teams, make the cut to move on.

 “This is the best part of the season. The part of the season where my athletes start hitting the goal times or marks they have been working for all season. I told them ‘it’s time to go for it. No holding back,’” said Turlock head coach Bergann Hernandez. “We qualified 27 boys and 21 girls along with six alternates to the section meet. We are breaking school records and it is amazing.”

Both Pitman and Turlock had a number of standouts and top finishes during Tuesday’s CCAL Championships.

Bulldog girls dominated the 100-meter dash. Turlock freshman standout Kylee Redman took first in the race with a time of 12.43. Teammate Katja Guerrero took second and Catelyn Cummings placed third.

Redman also placed first in the 200m race and Guerrero took third.

Pitman’s Mavleen Mann saw the best result for the two schools in the 1600m race after clocking in at 5:19.33. She took second in the 3200m race.

Turlock’s 4x1 relay team of Sarah Romo, Redman, Guerrero and Cummings placed first while Pitman’s Aman Kaur, Jordan Bettencourt, Ximena Cesa and Josalyn Ragland came in second.

Khaiya Simpons of Pitman saw the best finish in the girls shot put and Ashlan Lucero took third. Jazmyn Tubbs took fourth.

Simpson also placed second in the discus and Turlock’s Yamilet Madrigal Noyola placed third.

Bulldog girls also dominated the high jump, with Tubbs taking first and teammates Signe Rodrigues and Madasyn Egerton coming in second and third, respectively.

Romo took first in the pole vault and Kasandra Medel took second.

Cierra Verdone of Pitman took third in the long jump.

Maddy Hall of Pitman took first in the triple jump.

On the boys side, Sammy Wilson of Turlock took first in the 100 meter dash, while Quincey Williams trailed in second place. Denzel Steckwren took fourth and Colby Vierra fifth.

In the 200m race, Williams took first with a time of 22.31.

Turlock High’s Darian White placed first with a PR in the 400m race after clocking in at 50.96.

Jayson Martin (Pitman) placed first in the 800m race with a time of 2:02.17. Martin also placed second in the 1600m race while Turlock High’s Eric Hernandez took third.

Hernandez placed first in the 3200m race with a PR of 10:17.07.

Pitman’s Cameron Fader placed first in the 110m hurdles while teammate Donavyn Faria took second.

The Turlock 4x1 relay team of Wilson, White, Rios Rogers and Cade Gilbert placed first while Pitman took second with Michael Moore, Williams, Vierra and Steckwren.

Jackson Allen, Uriel Alvarez, Rogers and White placed first for Turlock in the 4x4 relay.

Pitman’s Edidguin Mendoza, Bryce Van Allen, Steven Harry and Williams took second in the 4x4 relay race.

Jake Dirkse of Turlock placed first in the discus and third in the shot put.

Nathan Garibay of Turlock placed first in the pole vault while teammates Silas Fredeen, Josiah Gonzales and Eric Guzman followed.

Ty Montgomery (Turlock) placed first in the long jump and Faria took second. Montgomery placed first in the triple jump and teammate Nick Santos placed second. Ty Thomson took third in the triple jump.

“We set a school record in thrower qualifiers.  Previous high was seven events, we had 13,” said Pitman head coach Thad Moren.

The Sac-Joaquin Section Division-II playoffs are slated to take place from American River College May 7 and 9 at a time yet to be announced.
